A Faded Star eBook Michael Freeport
Certain aspects of this book were strong:Military thinking was excellent
Tactical was great
Some good twists and reveals
It was good escape reading
It was very clean: I would let my kids read it
In the end, these outweighed the cons for me.
Some writing is clunky. The initial scenes were hard to get through, too descriptive. At your times the narrator gets a little too wonky. Some odd POV stuff. A few missed edits distracted me. Maybe a few too many deux ex machina resolutions... I also wish the command school training of Simmons and more of her ultimate development had been sketched out. Maybe in a flashback in the sequel ?
I hope the author keeps writing and focusing on his strengths.

A Faded Star eBook Michael Freeport Reviews
I enjoyed this book and the characters in it very much. While it might have had some long descriptions, I felt that they were there to lay down some background and perspective for the story as it unfolded. I even stayed up way too late to finish the book. I just bought the 2nd in the series and am looking forward to more questions answered and adventures to come!
MF has written of humans who migrated to the other side of the know universe. After human colonies were established they were attacked by an Alliance of six alien species. The Alien species departed and over 5000 years the human race recovered. Then a war occurred and humanity was nearly eliminated. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
So clearly described you can "see" the ships and everything as it happens! Well written and while there are lots of characters, it's not so many that you can't keep up. If you're a fan of sci-fi, I recommend this book and eventual series!
This was a good book right to the end. There was no ending! I hate it when they don't finish a story. If there is going to be a second book that would be OK with me, at least you would find out what happened to the ships that took off during the battle at the end.
A large, interesting SF story written in a style that, for me, was somewhat heavy-handed. There's a lot I liked about the ideas, and characterization was good. The plot was good, very good apart from the occasionally irrational character decisions (or failures to act, especially on the part of the aliens). The pace was okay and the actions scenes good. On the whole, I'd say good value for the money.
Ancient Earth humans had secretly seeded the planet Lashmere with humans, shortly before aliens destroyed humanity, with a fatal virus.
Now, thousands of years later, those same aliens have come looking for the remnants of humanity, in the hopes that the humans can save them from another invading alien civilization. But human technology is backward compared to the other space-faring alien civilizations.
All would be lost, except that the Earth humans had foreseen the Lashmere humans future need for advanced technology. That technology is hidden in another star system, and the Lashmere humans must find it.
One of the great things about E-books is you get to read interesting stories form authors that would otherwise be buried in the old publishing system of the past. Michael Freeport's knowledge on naval protocol is good and anyone who is a navy vet will see this right off. His writing style is smooth and easy to keep engaged in. I read some of the one star reviews and couldn't disagree more with them. I think they were insulted about navy marine animosity that actually exists, and is trying to trash the book out of spite. I look forward to reading future books from Mr. Freeport.
